Peer Review Process
Receipt of each article is acknowledged by e-mail to the contacting author upon receipt. Preliminary articles will not be considered for publication. The manuscript is read and examined for conformity to the Guide for Authors by the editor. Failure to meet the criteria outlined may result in return of the manuscript for correction before evaluation.
The manuscripts are evaluated according to the following aspects:
- Originality of the work.
- Relevance to scientific knowledge in Biotechnology.
- Background: Theoretical background adequate. Hypothesis, objectives and clear contribution to Biotechnology. Updated and quality references (75% or more references from the last decade and at the same time from ISI Web of Science).
- Methodology: Materials and methods appropriate and adequately described. Sound experimental design.
- Results: Data concise and sufficient. Statistics analysis when appropiate. Efficiency measurements. Figures clear and correct, only essential data should be included in figures. Elimination of figures, graphs and tables which add little or could be replaced by a few sentences or a statement of numerical values is recommended.
- Discussion: In-depth discussion, correct interpretation.
- Formal Aspects: Correct language, references properly cited. High quality figures. Adherence to usual and consistent nomenclature. Title and summary sufficiently informative.
All the above items will be evaluated as outstanding, good, fair, mediocre or poor by an assessment form given to evaluators.
The article could be: accepted (with no further revision); revise; reject, reject (very preliminary results); reject (out of scope).
If the paper is accepted with revisions, it must be send again for review to the same evaluators.
This journal operates a single blind review process. All contributions will be initially assessed by the editor for suitability for the journal. Papers deemed suitable are then sent to a minimum of two independent expert reviewers to assess the scientific quality of the paper. The Editor is responsible for the final decision regarding acceptance or rejection of articles. The Editor's decision is final. More information on types of peer review.
Publication Frequency
Journal articles are published as part of an issue with its own Table of Contents with the following frequency: January 15th; March 15th; May 15th; July 15th; September 15th and November 15th.

Open Access Policy
This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research and information freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Types of paper
Contributions falling into the following categories will be considered for publication: Original research papers, reviews and short communications.
Please ensure that you select the appropriate article type from the list of options when making your submission. Authors contributing to special issues should ensure that they select the special issue article type from this list.
In the following paragraphs you will find a brief description of each contribution.
Research. These articles present original research and address a clearly stated specific hypothesis or question. Papers should provide novel approaches and new insights into the problem addressed. Manuscripts should be 3000 to 5000 words and they should have at least 15 references. There is no limit to figures and tables.
These articles should include:
- Introduction: It should be brief and limited to the definition of the problem, the aims and purposes of the research and its relation with other studies in the field. Also the working hypothesis must be clearly stated.
- Materials and methods: It should include relevant details on the experimental design and techniques so that the experiments can be repeated.
- Results: Results should be clearly presented. Tables and figures should only be included if required to fully understand the data.
- Discussion: The aim of this section is the interpretation of the results and their relation to the existing knowledge. The contribution to Biotechnology must be clearly stated. The information given in any part of the text may be cited but not repeated in the Discussion Section. Alternatively Results and Discussion can be presented in one section.
- Acknowledgments: The acknowledgments of the contributions of colleagues can be stated in this section.
- Financial support: The acknowledgments for financial support should be cited here.

Review. Review articles are an attempt by one or more authors to sum up the current state of the research on a particular topic. Ideally, the author searches for everything relevant to the topic, and then sorts it all out into a coherent view of the "state of the art" as it now stands. Review articles should have at least 80 references and they should have between 4000 and 6000 words.
Review articles should inform about:
- the main researchers working in a field
- recent major advances and discoveries
- significant gaps in the research
- current debates
- future directions
They include an abstract, an introduction that outlines the main theme, brief subheadings, and an outline of important unresolved questions.
Only review articles from experts in the field will be considered for publication.
For stylistics details, please refer to Guide for authors.
Short communications. A short communication is for a concise, but independent report representing a significant contribution to biotechnology.
Short communication is not intended to publish preliminary results. Only if these results are of exceptional interest and are particularly topical and relevant will be considered for publication. It should be no more than 3000 words, and could include two figures or tables. It should have at least 8 references.
The text should be divided into the following sections: introduction, experimental, results, and discussion. Results and discussion sections may be combined.
